It’s been a long time since I talked about books on this blog, in fact, the last time was about 11 months ago, sharing my Man Booker Prize 2016 video. With 2018 done, I thought I would share some of my favourite books of the year. I have done full videos on all my books, so I’ve just handpicked a couple from the video, you can check out the videos at the end for more books and full details about why I love them.
Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Raceby Reni Eddo-Lodge
This is should be mandatory reading for everyone, not only is it about Britain’s history with racism and slavery (very few books are) but it explains to white people the frustrations black women face when it comes to talking (let alone dealing) with racism. This non-fiction read is short, to the point and informative. I want to read more like it.
So I did it! I finally released my first YouTube video, I feel ancient considering I’ve been watching YouTubers for over 4 years and I’ve only just started mine up but that doesn't matter because the important thing is that I've started! Thankfully my aim isn’t to become famous just have a platform to talk about books and whatever I fancy, as well as share my thoughts with people.
I had to cut my first video in half because I talk way too much and I didn’t want to have a long video as my first video, and YouTube has restrictions on loading videos that are longer than 15 mins if you’re not verified or something like that. Regardless I finally have my first video up, even if it is in two parts.
I hope with time I can get the settings absolutely right as I know for sure my camera has the ability to produce a more high resolution video. Until then I’d love it if you could check out the videos, leave me a comment, like & subscribe. I have so many ideas for other videos and hopefully, once I get into the swing of things I'll be more concise and articulate in my videos.
Inspired by the wonderful Madeline and her must-read for 2018 post, I wanted to share the books I'm looking forward to reading this year. I always have books in mind to read but then get distracted by deals or hype and forget about the books I've been dying to read, so hopefully, this list will hold me accountable.
This is also the perfect time to post this because I'm starting a YouTube channel that's gonna be all about books! At least for the time being. I finally bit the bullet and did it and I'm slowly thinking up content to post on. The first video will be out on Sunday 4th February and it's about the Man Booker Prize Shortlist 2016 so make sure you subscribe to catch it and let me know what you think :)
Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge
I've heard about this book for the longest time and saw the funniest thread about it last year when a girl was reading it on the train. The title itself is enough to make it intriguing but being a black woman in Britain I want to read it to find out what the author's experiences are because I've had lots! Learning some history would also be great, ever since I read Homegoing I've been wanting to delve deeper into Ghanaian/African/Black writing.
Instead of my usual ‘What I learned this month’ (which I will still be doing as sporadically as before) I thought I would share a video that I haven’t stopped thinking about since I watched it.
Kassie is one of my favourite YouTubers. She’s not the typical beauty YouTuber, so I do think she is my favourite YouTuber outside of that. I really like her personality and I feel I can relate to her. I think in the midst of the YouTubers who can be repetitive (there is only so much beauty I can take) Kassie is a breath of fresh air. Her latest video was absolutely amazing, so much so that I just had to share it with you all.
Kassie’s video struck a chord with me because in the past couple of days (and currently) all I have felt is numbness and depression. Kassie’s video made me feel something other than that. She was also right and the feelings she evoked in me have allowed a bit of light into my life.
Like Kassie’s says in the video, she stopped doing things because she was worried or sure they wouldn’t meet her expectations. I do the same; I keep myself from going to things because I fear that if they don’t meet my expectations then it’s a waste of time and money. That said there are things I do turn down, just because they are not my thing. But as Kassie rightly pointed out, as a kid you just did things and didn’t worry about the outcome. I was like that for a while as a kid, but then even then I still kept myself away from people. I want to stop doing that, and I want to stop worrying so much about having an awful time when I’m out, that I decide to just stay inside instead. Because it hasn’t helped me, it’s just hindered me. This may not seem like much, but as a result I've said yes to a drink with a friend tomorrow night, I previously had said no because I didn't see what I could achieve from it. But here's to trying.
I loved the way Kassie filmed this and the voice over. I hope you enjoy her video has much as me. Also can I point out how short it is? She just gets straight to the point and just talks about things we all experience, but maybe are not widely addressed by many YouTubers (which in a way I'm glad about because they would waffle on).
So I know everyone is talking New Year plans or post round ups, but before I signed off for 2014 I wanted to share an update on the YouTube channel I talked about before. First things first, it exists. Me friend Nettie and I did sit down and film a video, but I might have stupidly not transferred the close up shots from her memory card to my laptop, so editing is still in progress for that!
In the meantime, I threw caution to the wind, and filmed a video of me unboxing my secret santa gift. All is explained in the video, so if you want to hear me talking at the speed of light (I only do so for the first minute) then click below!
And before I forget Happy New Year :) Wishing you all a wonderful time tonight, be safe and enjoy whatever you do :) xxx
Welcome to 2.0 of Pull Down The Moon. So because I’ve really gotten into blogging I decided that it was time to actually have a decent theme. I’ve been searching for the past two weeks and actually ended up buying two. The first one I bought I thought I loved, but when I uploaded it to my blog I really didn’t like it, I wanted something simple and clean. So I ended up with this gem from MangoBlogsShop and I absolutely love how simple it is. I still have a couple of things I'd like to add in, but for now I am so happy with it.
I don’t have any grand news to accompany my new layout however;
I’m still balancing everything whilst trying to produce good content. Considering
how restricted I am in work when it comes to content creation, I really want to
make sure what I put on here has my touch and is interesting. I have however,
created a blog schedule which has been super helpful in mapping out my ideas
and seeing how frequently I can actually post.
One piece of interesting news to note is that my friend and
I have decided to start a YouTube channel! Her name is Antonette and she blogs
over at Bazinga Buys. Please check her out especially the makeup she has been
posting for Halloween – she is super talented and I’m so excited to work with
her. We are just thinking about names at the moment and then we should be good
to go. This is actually very exciting and should have been my grand news haha.
But I never thought I would do YouTube so it’s very exciting to be putting
myself out there and going on this journey.
The final bit of news I guess is my ‘voice behind the blog’
page, which is just below my banner. I’ve actually had the page for a while but
never gave it a moment in the spotlight, but do go check it out as it’s my about
me page and even explains the reason for my blog title.
I have some posts planned for this week as I had a lovely
shop in Oxford Street yesterday and cannot wait to share some bits with you.
Until then there is a range of posts in the archive to keep you busy and they’ll
be more aesthetically pleasing with the new layout! I hope everyone has a lovely Sunday.
