 So what’s it about?

Welcome to Hotel Kerobokan, or Hotel K, Bali's most notorious jail. Its walls touch paradise; sparkling oceans, surf beaches and palm trees on one side, while on the other it's a dark, bizarre and truly frightening underworld of sex, drugs, violence and squalor. Hotel K's filthy and disease ridden cells have been home to the infamous and the tragic: a Balinese King, Gordon Ramsay's brother, Muslim terror bombers, beautiful women tourists and surfers from across the globe. Petty thieves share cells with killers, rapists, and gangsters. Hardened drug traffickers sleep alongside unlucky tourists, who've seen their holiday turn from paradise to hell over one ecstasy pill. Hotel K is the shocking inside story of the jail and its inmates, revealing the wild 'sex nights' organised by corrupt guards for the prisoners who have cash to pay, the jail's ecstasy factory, the killings made to look like suicides, the days out at the beach, the escapes and the corruption that means anything is for sale - including a fully catered Italian jail wedding, or a luxury cell upgrade with a Bose sound system.

 My thoughts:

I bought this book because of Kindle Daily Deal’s. Yes, I’m a sucker for them. And I’m so glad I did. Let me just say I loved this book, I gave it 5 out of 5 on Goodreads because it has been the first book I’ve read this year that I just stayed up all night to read it. I could not stop turning the pages.

The author Kathryn Bonella was at ‘Hotel K’ writing the biography of Schapelle Corby, when she found that actually all the inmates had a story to tell. Schapelle still claims her innocence and in the book she isn’t actually talked about that much. Her story is interesting though, whilst I haven’t read her biography I find her fascinating. Simply because she got 20years for drug smuggle which she denied, had she admitted it her sentence would have been a lot less but she refuses to admit to something she didn’t do. She has recently had her sentence reduced by 5 years, but I think she still has about 7 more to do. She has recently been released on parole. All of this isn’t in the book by the way; I got happy searching away on Google.

But ANYWAY back to the book. Most inmates were guilty of their crimes and openly admitted that but were outraged by the harsh sentences they received. As the ‘what’s it all about’ states this book takes you through the reality of prison in Bali – and it ain’t pretty.

‘Hotel K’ is Kerobokan Prison in Bali and Bonella’s story is about the residents of this prison, which includes a mix of tourists who are thrown into this prison for various drug offences, and locals who have committed various minor offences. It’s a pretty international prison with the book including prisoners from Italy, Australia and the UK. It’s a prison for men and women, but the women are kept separate from men. From the sounds of the prison, it’s much more horrific than you know you’d expect prison to be. You have inmates who have cut off people’s heads, inmates who have tried to smuggle drugs into the country and inmates who have stolen a loaf of bread living side by side. This book just gives you an insight into the day to day life within this prison; just imagine how terrible it is being in Bali and being stuck in bloody prison. It also gives you an insight into how people pass the time, sometimes it sounded like a right laugh, but overall you know it’s a place that breaks you down. I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'm being vague, but you have to read it!

I think the most important thing to note about why I liked it so much is, that the stories are all true accounts. Being someone that reads a lot of fiction, I think I forget that there are real stories out there that are also another world. That’s what I loved about this book, it felt like another world. It might has well be as it’s prison in Bali, but hey it is real life for some people.

I think for me what made it absolutely fantastic was the pictures at the end, now I don’t know if this sounds strange, but whilst I thought the book was utterly fantastic while I was reading it they were just people. When I saw it had pictures suddenly everything became that much real. I would have given it 4 out of 5 but the pictures added that personal quality and won me over. I finished this book at 3 in the morning and was so sad that I had no more stories of sex, drugs and just prison life I guess, to keep me company :(

Smashbox Liquid Halo HD Foundation Review + Photo Finish Primer

11 March 2014

So about two weeks ago I went off in search for a new foundation. My MAC was too light for me and I just wanted a better one than my Sleek one, I also wanted an oil free foundation. After watching Lisa Eldridge’s foundation series, I thought I would try Revlon Color Stay, so I headed off to Marble Arch Superdrug and Boots to see if they would have my colour. No such luck! However the new Boots that has opened up in Marble Arch had a Smashbox stand and I thought I’d just browse and had one of the lovely assistants come up to me. I told her what I was looking for and my skin type and she recommended me this foundation:

When she applied it on I thought, 'bloody hell she is applying a lot' but now after using it I see that it felt like a lot because the pump emits the smallest amount. Anyway in the store it looked wonderful but I was sceptical because of the bright lighting in store. I purchased the Liquid Halo HD Foundation (oil free) at £27 something, and came home to look at it properly. I even rubbed off half my face and got my friend to look at the difference to see if it was worth keeping. She said yes, so you know three opinions on the foundation were good enough for me to keep it and try it. Plus I was going out that night so I whipped it out of the box to try it.

I didn’t see a point in swatching it on my hand because my hands are several shades lighter than my face. I’ve ummed and ahhed about this foundation for a bit since wearing it over the past couple of weeks. I think the main thing is; I’m used to feeling foundation on my skin and with this I felt like it was barely there! Although this is a good thing (very good) it was weird for me, I had to keep looking in the mirror to check that I had actually applied some to my face! It was only 3 days ago that I looked again at the bottle and realised it was a HD foundation. After my lusting for Make Up Forever HD Invisible Cover foundation I was so shocked at myself for not noticing. I don’t know if the HD factor is the reason for its soft like feeling on the skin but whatever it is I certainly like it!

Overall I really like this foundation. I don’t wear foundation on a day to day basis but I feel like it is an all purpose foundation for me simply because, on day to day occasions I can wear it when my skin looks rough and it doesn’t look try hard. But then for special occasions I can build it up for the occasion. The foundation is medium to full coverage and is a 30ml bottle. I also love how much of a perfect match this is for my skin tone; I have never had a foundation that suits my face colour and neck so well. It is also a 16 hour wear foundation.

I also received a sample of their primer with my purchase, as she put that on my face before doing applying the foundation. This is the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer (again oil free).

I love this primer! Now that I have tried this one, I really don’t think I can bear to put my foundation on without it, I have tried this foundation without the primer and I didn’t feel it looked as great and my T-Zone got oiler very quickly. So next thing to purchase and weep about is the primer. I also received some samples of their new eye shadow palette, but of course I’ve misplaced that! I am looking forward to trying more from Smashbox though because I’ve generally heard many good things about them.

Have you ever tried anything from Smashbox? What other thing should I try?

February Books!

16 February 2014

Kindle Daily Deals is my enemy. Everyday it seems there is a new book I must have. Currently I have books to read and I know I’ll just keep buying more with every deal.

So this month I am aiming to read 3 books. I’m a pretty avid reader anyway, but I have set myself a goal on Goodreads to read 40 this year. Last year it was 50 and, due to university and finding some books so boring that I avoided them all, I didn’t reach my goal. So this year I went lower and hope to make it. If I find I might actually go over, I’ll change my target. Anyway so my three books this month are:

A Whole New You - I am a sucker for self-help books. I’ve read so many that my life should be in top tip shape; alas this is sadly not the case. I really have read A-LOT of self-help books, and yet I still continue to read more and more (and more). This was on the Kindle Daily Deals for 99p, so even though I gave up reading self-help books about a year ago (it just got boring) I figured I could give this one a try.

12 Years a Slave – With the film having come out recently (December I believe) the book has obviously been making the rounds, and as it will take me about a year to even watch the film I thought I would snap up the book. Films that have been adapted from books tend to be incredibly cheap with the release of the film, last year or so, I bought ‘Life of Pi’ on the Kindle for 20p. Yes 20p. So I was certainly swayed by Kindle Daily Deals price of 49p!

Life After God – I picked this up at a charity store when I was dropping off come clothes. I love buying books at charity stores because they are cheap and I end up buying books I never would have come across. Buying at a charity shop really does mean judging a book by its cover for me (and the blurb, I’m not that bad) so it’s always full of surprises for me.

My hope with this whole thing is that I can bring you book reviews after I’ve read them. I have always wanted to review books but the truth is I’m lazy, so all my thoughts about the books go un-talked about! So no promises, but hey if that doesn’t work out at least you’ll have an idea of what I’m reading this month (which is something everyone wants to know).

February Wishlist!

9 February 2014

So as my love of YouTube and make-up/beauty has grown I have a long long list of items I wish I had right now, but will definitely be acquiring at some point!

February Wishlist

1. Leighton Denny Crystal Nail File. I heard about the nail file whilst watching Alix at I Covet Thee's Best of 2013 video. Amazon describes this as 'the Rolls Royce of nail files.' I'm so convinced! And I know it's steep for a nail file but it's reusable so obviously worth the price.

2. Himalayan Detox Salts. I have wanted this ever since I read a review Adrienne from The Sunday Girl did. Then Anna from Vivianna does Makeup mentioned it in her Best of 2013 video and I was like 'oh yeah I wanted that.' I am forever having trouble sleeping and everything I've read about this makes me think it will work for me. So I need it. Pronto.

3. Urban Decay Cannonball Waterproof Mascara. Claire from heyclaire talked about this in her 2013 beauty favourites video and for some reason I thought 'I just have to have that' so it's here. The description on the UD page pretty much make me want even more too 'Mermaids can now sing their siren songs with abandon, and high maintenance types can cry all they want.'

4. YSL Rouge Volupté Shine Fuchsia in Rage 19. I found out about this through Karima at Shameless Fripperies' YouTube channel. How frikkin gorgeous is this colour?! I think it's actually something I would have to go and try on first, which is bothersome to me as I haaaate shopping, but I'm hoping I'll love it because I just love all the swatches I've seen of it.

5. Nars Laguna Bronzing Powder. I have heard so many people with different skin tones praise this and from the swatches I have seen, I just know that I have to have it. Absolutely gorgeous.

6&9. Make Up Forever HD Invisible Cover Foundation & Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. I have heard so much about these two everywhere. I need a good foundation and these seem to come up in everyone's top 5/10's. I cannot wait to have at least one of them! Again these are both things I need to go and try on, which loathe, but it will have to be done. Even though the Make Up Forever one seems to be located miles and miles away from my house.

7. Urban Decay Naked Palette 2. So I am new to all make-up related things, but one thing I have seen flying around the past couple of months is the UD naked 3 palette. Obviously with its new release people have been swatching and reviewing it, so I was intrigued to see what 1 and 2 looked like. And I've decided that number 2 has my heart.

8. Anastasia Brow Wiz. Again another product I have heard soo much about and I currently have my Maybelline one, but I really want to try this one out. I've heard so much about it on YouTube and it really does look simple and easy. I just have to figure out my colour!

Remington Style Works Wand Kit

6 February 2014

When I was in my teens I loved straight hair, like dead straight hair. I just couldn't get enough of it. Probably about 4 years ago I started to realise actually it wasn't so great, it was just plain boring. So now I like waves or loose curls. I've had wavy weaves or just had straight ones and curled them myself. Basically I just feel like hair has to have something to it, although realistically on most days I run a brush through my hair and leave it at that.

So before Christmas I purchased the Remington Style Works Wand Kit

I had others in my basket, but in the end I actually just went for this because everything was purple and it came with the extra bits! Seriously I get so stressed out when it comes to comparing things and choosing what I think is best.

So we have:
1 curling wand
1 paddle brush
2 clips
1 heat protect glove
1 compact mirror

In all honesty, I'm really happy with my purchase. I am by no mean a pro when it comes to hair (like I said before brush and go) or tools but of course this was easy to use and I got the curls I wanted.
Here was the result when I first tried it, I actually rushed it because I had somewhere to be, but this is it without brushing it out:

I have tried it other times but to be honest I forgot to take better pictures of the curls, but here are some.

Anyway I'm really happy with the curling wand, when I am bothered to do my hair, I love using it. So I'm glad I finally have a curling wand in my possession. For the price it's great and it does what it's supposed to do.

My main problem though, is finding something to hold the curl; I currently use VO5 Strong Hold Weather Resistant Hairspray, which couldn't be far from the truth. Even when I'm at home the curls drop. I sprayed this in for a night out on New Years and possibly an hour and half later, my curls dropped! Does anyone have any good recommendations for holding sprays?
